Macau, China, 22 Jan - The composite Consumer Price Index (CPI) of Macau for 2009 increased by 1.18 percent year-on-year, according to the figures released on Thursday by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

Price indices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco; clothing and footwear; and food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 9.80 percent, 9.50 percent and 5.53 percent respectively for 2009, according to the DSEC.

The figures also showed that the composite CPI for December 2009 increased by 0.78 percent to 102.28 year-on-year, in which price indices of clothing and footwear, transport, miscellaneous goods and services, and food and non-alcoholic beverages rose by 12.64 percent, 6.89 percent, 4.81 percent, and 4.09 percent respectively, attributable to dearer prices of autumn/winter clothing, gasoline, gold jewelry, fresh fish and vegetables.

Meanwhile, the composite CPI for December 2009 increased by 0. 61 percent month-on-month. However, the composite CPI for the fourth quarter of 2009 fell by 0.14 percent over the same quarter of 2008, with decrease in the price indices of education, housing and fuels, and communication.
