Career Leaders: Beautiful Life for Beauty Concierges
Simply waltz into the Beauty World at DFS Galleria Macao when you have any questions on skin care or makeup. Professionals like Winnie Tang are ready to answer them.
“It’s a unique service at DFS. We’re trained to give unbiased advice because our mission is to deliver a superior integrated customer experience in an innovative shopping environment,” says Tang, Team Lead of Sales, Beauty Department. “According to individual needs, we help choose the most suitable products from our extensive collection. It’s like telling clothing stylists your desired look, and having them combine pieces from different brands to create a flattering outfit.”
DFS, the world’s leading luxury retailer for globetrotters, started operations in Hong Kong in 1960 and soon fanned out across the world. It is now co-owned by French luxury goods group Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH) and founder Robert Warren Miller.
Beauty World can be found in The Boulevard at City of Dreams and The Shoppes at Four Seasons. The stores offer some 32 beauty brands and 28 fragrance brands including Dior, Estee Lauder, Giorgio Armani, Guerlain, La Prairie, and Shu Uemura.
“DFS brings together lots of venerable names under one roof. Hence, it’s a very good opportunity for me to learn about all the best brands at one time. That’s very beneficial to my career,” says Tang. “In addition to regular product training directly from different manufacturers, DFS has set up the DFS Beauty School to help us earn ITEC certificates in skin care and makeup. It’s the only place in Macau we can get such internationally accredited recognition.”
The DFS Beauty School is operated in collaboration with CMM Monita Hair & Beauty Academy division in Hong Kong. The institution was founded in 1966 by Professor Cheng Ming-ming, a veteran in the industry with almost 40 years of experience.
“First of all, we’re introduced to the basic skin structure and function. After that, we learn about the skills and techniques for day-to-day makeup. It’s a well-structured program that allowed me to master every step with ease,” says Tang.
When a guest steps into the DFS Beauty World looking for a makeover, Tang will first inquire about her daily routines and then perform a general skin analysis. Tang can then pinpoint current problems and suggest specific products to help improve the skin from within. Tang can also tailor a daily regimen for each guest that takes into account advances in skin-care technology and product lines.
“We’re well aware of the products in the pipeline because we regularly go over to Hong Kong or overseas to study them. So when a new series hits the shelf, we’re already familiar with its capability,” says Tang. “Same for makeup: We learn the trends one season ahead, so we’ll be ready to do demonstrations when the products launch.”
In addition to professional product knowledge, Tang also gets to brush up on her communication skills and sales techniques through DFS’s tailor-made training program—Apprentice to Master, with the latter focusing on the psychology of marketing and consumer behavior.
“The company puts great weight on our professional and personal growth; that’s why we are constantly upgrading ourselves. It’s rare to come across a company that is willing to dedicate so many resources to cultivating local talent,” says Tang.
Yet the quality of DFS that Tang appreciates the most is the team spirit that pervades the company. “We’re like a family. We help each other out whenever someone is in need. We study the product information together, practice makeup on each other, and critique each other’s sales pitch. It’s a very heart-warming working environment that I enjoy a lot,” says Tang with a smile.
